(#722) GETTING TO THE HEART OF CONNECTIONS USING INSTAGRAM STORIES

DOES THE THOUGHT OF GETTING ON CAMERA MAKE YOU BREAK OUT INTO A SWEAT?

Can I let you in on a little secret?? I used to record my videos like 20 times. I’d shoot, watch them while cringing, and then delete and do it again until I was so fed up, I wouldn’t post. How did I get over the mental hump? I realized video marketing wasn’t a trend that was going away. With platforms like Instagram and TikTok becoming highly focused on video content it became clear that I had to get on board.

So today I want to spill the secrets that helped me get more comfortable making connections through video.

We’ll start by taking baby steps using Instagram Stories.

Instagram Stories are a great way to get started because the videos are only 15 seconds long and they disappear after 24 hours.

These short videos help you to reach a larger audience and shortcut the connection time. People can binge-watch your content and feel like they know you much quicker than with just static posts.

Plus, Instagram has made it so easy for all of us to create high-quality content with these features:

  • Filters

  • Caption mode using the app THREADS

  • Music for some

  • Engagement tools like polls and the question box

SO HOW DO WE GET STARTEd FORMING REAL CONNECTIONS USING INSTAGRAM STORIES?

First of all, remember that connections, especially meaningful ones, are made with people. Logos help with brand recognition, but people are at the heart of a brand.

HOW TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH SHOWING UP ON CAMERA:

  • To look comfortable on camera, get physically comfortable. Wear something that makes you feel your best. Look through your camera roll and see the colors and items of clothing that make you the most confident. Wear those next time you are going to shoot a video!

  • Stand in front of natural light. It is THE MOST flattering! If you just aren’t feeling it that day, add a filter that makes you feel your best.

  • You don’t have to stare straight at the camera the entire time. Add a little variety by walking and talking.

  • You want to have an inviting tone and demeanor, but talking to a camera can feel cold and impersonal. Talk to the camera like you’re talking to a friend. To help me get in the right frame of mind, I look at a picture of my sister and pretend like I’m talking to her. It might sound hokey, but it’s a game-changer.

  • Don't worry about being perfect and let your personality shine - all your nuances are what people will remember and connect with AND don’t worry about family or colleagues watching. Don’t worry about who is watching.

  • Don't try to be someone else. If being a jokester isn't your thing, don't be. But if you are silly, let that shine through. Authenticity is key. Think about what your friends love about you. Bring THAT YOU in front of the camera.

  • Show the BTS of what goes into running a community - all the hard work to prep a unit, prep an event, etc.

  • If you’re comfortable and your company policy allows it, show your team after hours (within reason). What's your why - your kiddos, your family, your love of the industry, your goals?
